What to Bring with You

Before you take off to Morocco, there are several things you will wish you had with you once you land. I will update this list as nessasary. My experiences are with a host family, not that of a hotel. These tips are for those traveling to stay with family or a host family. Here are my personal suggestions.

Lock for your Suitcase

If your host family has a maid or lots of people coming and going about the house, you want to be able to keep your valuables safe. I recommend getting a good lock for your suitcase and leaving your valuables inside instead of spread out in the room you stay at. If you dont lock up your goods, dont be surprised when things start magically disappearing. In addition, dont leave your personal items such as shampoo or toothpaste out in the family restroom. It can also magically disappear. Taking these simple precautions can help you avoid and disasters and the blame game.

Towels

You will need your own large body towel and one face towel. Moroccan homes have towels, but you will really be glad you brought your own.

Toilet paper
Most moroccan homes use a traditional Moroccan toilet: hole in the ground. After they finish their business, they use a European style wash but no toilet paper. Even the homes that have regular toilets do not always have toilet paper available. I would suggest to bring 2 rolls with you. This should suffice until you get the opportunity to go shopping. Moroccan supermarkets such as Marjane and Supermarche sell toilet paper.

Liquid hand soap
If you do not want to be stuck using a communal bar soap the first few days of your stay, then bring a small container of liquid hand soap. Latter on you will be able to purchase more at the stores in morocco.

Slippers:
You will find many Moroccan homes have marble floors everywhere. Bring slippers if you dont want to destroy you socks and keep your feet warm.

Toothpaste
I found on my stay that my family uses some herb flavored toothpaste. Its not the minty fresh Im used to, so I was glad I brought my own tube of Crest. As with the hand soap, bring only a small amount because you can buy more at the local stores (which apparently sell everything).

Shampoo Conditioner and Body wash:
Same story as the toothpaste. If you dont want to end up using some strange brand, bring a travel size amount of your own till you can get to a local store.

Body Sponge:
Absolutely a must. You must bring your own, no questions asked.

Q-tips:
If you like your ears nice and clean, bring a small baggies of q-tips.

Large plastic Tupperware:
If you plan to bring back desserts from morocco, then you should buy some of those really light weight plastic containers with lids from the dollar store. They snap shut and are a better price than you would find here. To save space in your suitcase, you can pack stuff in them both ways of your trip.

Personal Items:
As with any trip, dont leave home without your personal items such as deodorant, pads or tampons, lotion, perfume, makeup, whatever. Dont forget your comfy PJ's.
